Okay one more post before I leave for Augusta Spartans fan club party at church near Fort Gordon.
A lot of you want me to explain our little pet project the Youth Indoor football league.
The YIFL is made up of four teams that are Columbia County GA and Richmond County GA Recreation Department teams. Next season Edgefield County and Aiken County will be in the mix.
These are regular teams except they havent played since last year. They are required to rotate personel in and out all season. So that many kids can play
They are four teams
The Augusta Spartans - my favorites
The Despardos who look like Columbus
The Knights
The cowboys
oddly enough they actually look like the four teams in the WIFL uniform wise.
They are governed by the YIFL Comissioner and have a set rule book and policys that are voted on and approved by all four of them. They have their own playbooks but most use at least some of the Spartan plays.
They practice one week before their next game at rec center. They play in the Augusta Richmond County Civic center before the home games at least three hours before Augusta game. So for one hour the field is dead for regular team practice walkthrough.
They pay their own way and have their own sponsors which they display proudly in the endzone on their banner. Their equipment is already there and only one of them had to buy jerseys.
At the end of the season they will be playing in a championship game and be awarded throphys.
The cheerleading squad is made up of kids mostly sisters of the guys playing and is ran by the wives of the coaches they are cool.
Other than sometimes failing to follow directions with the civic center and calling Spartan headquarters to much were glad to have them.
We came up with a little incentive for them to join us. Its either $ 7.00 or $ 10.00 gets you a all day ticket to see them play the kids get in free and often hang out with their favorite Spartan players before games and sometimes players even go to their practices.
So by keeping them there all afternoon we also have some stuff going on outside to amuse the crowds and basically just make it a family day.
So that is what we do.
