Columbia Stingers coach Corey Miller said his team will join the American Indoor Football Association next season.
The Stingers were barely in what remains of the National Indoor Football League on Saturday night at the Crown Coliseum as the Fayetteville Guard stayed unbeaten with a 108-0 win.
That’s not a misprint, 108-0.
Columbia dressed just 11 players — less than half of the league’s roster limit of 25 players — and arrived late because a bus provided by the Guard broke down en route to Fayetteville. The Stingers warmed up in virtual darkness as the lights were dimmed for the player introductions of the Guard.
“It was a bad day,” Miller said. “Most of our team had to work. We had to come up with what we’ve got. It was a bad situation but we wanted to come up here and honor our commitment to play.”
Columbia (2-6) had eight turnovers and two high snaps that resulted in safeties as the Guard (9-0) got its first shutout of the season.
“We have to play up to our level,” said Fayetteville defensive lineman Joe Morrison. “We can’t play down to anybody else’s level.
“Not to put them down. They came to play. The score was a lot to a little but they played to their level and we played to our level.”
Columbia stopped Fayetteville on the Guard’s first possession but that was the only series that Fayetteville didn’t finish with a touchdown.
Shawn Withy-Allen hit Jammie Deese for a score covering 45 yards for a 7-0 lead with 4:22 left in the first quarter.
Jasun Thompson looked as though he might take a knee on the game’s last snap but instead he threw to Jamaal Legette for a 17-yard touchdown to end the game.
The Guard led 48-0 at the half.
Withy-Allen threw for seven touchdowns and Thompson tossed for three scores.
“Pretty much a tune-up for the playoffs,” said Wilmont Perry, who ran for two touchdowns. “That’s all it was.”
